Location: Pakistani American Cultural Center, 1590 Oakland Road, Suite B213, San Jose, CA

Khalid Mahmood, Director of Labour Education Foundation (LEF), and member of Labour Relief Campaign (LRC) will speak on the current flood crisis, relief efforts, the demand to write off loans and the condition of peasants and labourers in affected regions.

The Labor Education Foundation (LEF) was established in 1993 with a vision of "empowering the working class to protect its social, economic and political rights." It also works to promote democratic norms, peaceful relations between Pakistan and India, and literacy among youth and trade unions.

"Mornings in Jenin: A Palestinian Epic Narration", with Susan Abulhawa, 4/22/10 Thurs 7pm

"Mornings in Jenin" is a multi-generational story about a Palestinian family. It is a deeply human novel - a novel of history, identify, friendship, love, terrorism, surrender, courage, and hope. "Mornings in Jenin" forces us to take a fresh look at one of the defining conflicts of our times.

Susan Abulhawa is a renowned academic advocate of Palestinian rights. She founded "Playgrounds for Palestine", an NGO that builds playgrounds in Palestine and UN refugee camps in Lebanon.

"A heart-wrenching, powerfully written novel that could do for Palestine what 'The Kite Runner' did for Afghanistan."

The Age of Orphans is Laleh's first novel in a trilogy that follows the lives of three generations of Kurdish men as they grapple with landlessness, migration and national identity. Laleh Khadivi was born in Iran in 1977. In 2002 she began to research the Kurds, particularly their fate in the southwestern region of Iran under the first Shah. Laleh has worked extensively as a documentary filmmaker, has taught at Emory University and won the 2008 Whiting writers award.
